"Let reason go before every enterprize, and counsel before every action."--Ecclesiasticus 38:33
"Such hierarchical arrangement is natural."--Chng Chou in The Sayings of Chuang Chou, translated by James A. Ware, page 89

What is a hierarchy?

(1) the most prevalent principle in all of nature;

(2) the principle of order for all of life;

(3) the principle that puts the survival of your brain over the survival of your big toe;

(4) order or the opposite of chaos;

(5) the supreme organizing principle of all living organisms;

(6) how sorting is accomplished;

(7) prioritizing;

(8) one system of memory organization in humans and computers;

(9) what all disaster planning is based on;

(10) the ideal guiding the triage principle of emergency medical care;

(11) a system of social order in animals that they will never be so foolish as to consider giving up;

(12) what life could not exist without, e.g., if the foot has the same hierarchical status as the brain then we would sacrifice the brain when both of our feet were hurting in order to take care of our doubly important feet;

(13) the structure used in all forms of life to manage power and control;

(14) what you want your surgeon to understand before they start removing parts;

(15) the ideal you use to put first things first in your life;

(16) the principle you use to value the parts of your life;

(17) when you know what comes first and what comes last;

(18) the ideal used to develop sane financial management;

(19) what controls the assignment of resources during a disaster;

(20) what works well--but not for everything and anything;

(21) what depends on "how" you use it for it to be good or bad just like everything else;

(22) what computer flow charts use;

(23) what planning organizers, Gantt charts, (CPM) Critical Path Management, cascade charts, and project management are all based on.
