The "Yes-And" Method for Inner Conflict & Temptation "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison."--Matthew 5:25 QUOTATIONS SCRIPTURE "For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock."--Psalms 27:5 "Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues."--Psalms 31:20 "Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me."--Psalms 143:9 "There shall no evil happen unto him that feareth the Lord; but in temptation even again he will deliver him."--Ecclesiasticus 33:1 "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison."--Matthew 5:25 "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."--Matthew 6:13 "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."--Matthew 26:41 "And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil."--Luke 11:4 "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."--I Corinthians 10:13 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."--James 1:2-4 "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."--James 1:12 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."--James 4:7 "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God."--I John 3:9 PAST Yes, I did that evil act then and now God is drawing me to do the good instead. Yes, I did that wrong thing then and isn't it wonderful that now I can do the opposite! Yes, I was acting like a ..., but isn't it great that I am NOT a ... so I can act the opposite in the future! PRESENT Yes, my desire is to do that evil and fortunately God is drawing me to choose otherwise. Yes, I am strongly inclined to commit that error and I am being given the grace I need from God to do the opposite. Yes, the temptation is great to do that and God is good to me in that he will hide me from great temptation until it passes. FUTURE Yes, my flesh does want that evil and isn't it great that God's angels are leading in the opposite direction! Yes, I am inclined to think and act that way and it is also true that I am free to think, feel, and act against those self-defeating ways. Yes, I want what is wrong for me and I will resist doing that. RESIST If I resist before I confess then I will be lost in an endless fight that I can only lose. Yet, if I resist after I confess then I can act the opposite and win. OVERCOME If I try to overcome temptation by disagreeing, then I will eventually lose. Yet, if I first agree, then I can overcome temptation. WEAKNESS If from weakness I try to cope with or problem-solve temptation, then I will fail. Yet, if I use my weakness to agree with the wrong desire and to turn it over to God--then I will win. First Question in Counseling |
