Transference occurs when the counselor notices that the client is viewing the counselor through models that the client has for relationships other than the counselor-client relationship.


Transference is most often noticed by the counselor when the client's models are of relationships that involve parent-to-child or authority-to-subordinate transactions.
Counter-transference occurs when the counselor notices that they are viewing the client through models that the counselor has for relationships other than the counselor-client relationship.
Transference awareness is helpful to establish and maintain a collaborative counselor-client relationship.
Transference is helpful to discover client models of relationships.
Transference is helpful to teach more effective models for relating.
