Apple will let you buy books from iTunes on your computer but not read them. Apple's reader program works only for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Bookworm is a free web-based viewing site that does a good job of displaying ebooks.
FORMAT CONVERSION
You can covert ebook formats with Calibre. For example, you can convert ePub books to the Kindle format and vice versa. But this only works if the book is not copy-protected (DRM is the copy protection standard).
Calibre's interface is clunky, amateurish, and designed for programmers. It has bugs. There is no easy way for non-programmers to report bugs. But there are not a lot of other options at this time, and some features are nice to have.
